Welsh Unemployment Rate Declines Significantly in Latest ONS Report
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released new data indicating a substantial drop in unemployment across Wales, with the rate falling well below the United Kingdom average. However, the agency has emphasized that these estimates should be interpreted with additional caution due to increased volatility in its Labour Force Survey.
Key Figures and Regional Comparisons
According to the ONS, the unemployment rate in Wales for the period from November 2025 to January 2026 decreased by 2.6% compared to the previous quarter, settling at 3.5%. In contrast, the UK-wide unemployment rate saw a slight increase of 0.1%, reaching 5.2%. This places Wales in a relatively favorable position among UK nations and regions.
The number of unemployed individuals in Wales was recorded at 54,000, marking a significant reduction of 40,000 from the August to October 2025 period. Meanwhile, the UK as a whole experienced an increase of 37,000 unemployed persons, bringing the total to 1.86 million.
Economic Inactivity and Employment Rates
Despite the positive unemployment trend, Wales continues to grapple with high levels of economic inactivity. The rate stands at 25.54%, affecting approximately 496,000 people. This is the second-highest rate in the UK, surpassed only by Northern Ireland at 26.7%. The UK-wide economic inactivity level is notably lower at 20.7%.
In terms of employment, Wales has an employment rate of 71.9%, which is below the UK average of 75.1%. Among UK nations and regions, only Northern Ireland reports a lower employment rate at 71.6%.
ONS and Welsh Government Perspectives
Liz McKeown, ONS Director of Economic Statistics, commented on the broader UK labour market, stating, "Labour market conditions were little changed at the start of the year. The number of workers on payroll rose slightly in the latest month but, overall, the recent picture has been broadly flat." She also noted that regular wage growth is at its lowest rate in over five years.
The Welsh Government has expressed reservations about relying solely on the Labour Force Survey data due to concerns over reliability. A spokesperson highlighted that the Annual Population Survey (APS) indicates an unemployment rate of 4.5% for Wales, slightly above the UK rate of 4.2%. The government advocates for using a range of sources for greater accuracy.
Youth Unemployment and Other UK Trends
Across the UK, youth unemployment for individuals aged 18 to 24 has surged to 14.5%, the highest level since early 2015. However, the rate for 16 and 17-year-olds decreased to 29.3%. The overall UK jobless rate was lower than economists' forecasts, which had predicted a rise to 5.3%.
Regional unemployment rates within the UK vary significantly:
- England: 5.4%
- Scotland: 3.9%
- Northern Ireland: 2.2%
- London: 7.9% (highest)
- North East: 7.1%
The Welsh Government remains committed to supporting economic growth, having assisted in creating over 50,000 jobs during the current Senedd term through various business programmes.
