Asda Issues Warning Over Temporary Fuel Shortages at Petrol Pumps
Asda has issued a warning about "temporary shortages" at some of its petrol pumps as the crisis in the Gulf region continues to impact fuel supply chains. The supermarket's boss, Allan Leighton, highlighted that demand has been significantly outstripping supply, leading to sporadic issues at forecourts.
Supply Chain Pressures and Sporadic Shortages
Leighton explained that fuel volumes have increased substantially, creating a tight supply situation. He noted, "Our fuel volumes are up quite significantly and clearly demand has been outstripping supply. Supply is tight and we are all trying hard on that." The temporary shortages have only affected "the odd pump" at a small number of Asda's petrol stations, typically when customers arrive during periods when the retailer is awaiting fuel deliveries.
He added, "We can expect to see that continue. The spikiness at the moment makes this tricky for us, as spikes can lead to temporary shortages. These are temporary and are addressed very quickly." Leighton also commented on the financial implications, stating, "People ask where the money is going and the government are getting a lot of money off the back of this."
UK Petrol Prices Hit Highest Levels Since 2024
This warning comes as UK petrol prices have surged to their highest point since May 2024, with fuel retailers continuing to increase costs at the pump. According to the RAC, petrol has now risen above the 150p mark, with the average price reaching 150.11p per litre. Diesel prices have also climbed sharply, averaging 177.68p per litre.
Before the Iran war began, petrol was priced at an average of 132.83p per litre, and diesel at 142.38p per litre, indicating a significant rise in fuel costs over a short period.
Impact on Motorists and Easter Travel Plans
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, warned that motorists will feel the extra financial burden, especially with the upcoming Easter weekend. He said, "With the long-awaited four-day Easter weekend almost within touching distance, the cost of getting away by car is going to be noticeably higher this year."
Williams highlighted that average prices at motorway services are even higher, at 166p for unleaded petrol and 182p for diesel. He advised drivers on long journeys to plan carefully where they refuel, recommending, "The best advice remains to shop around for fuel and make use of free apps such as myRAC to never pay a penny more for fuel than is absolutely necessary."
The combination of supply chain disruptions from the Gulf crisis and rising fuel prices poses challenges for both retailers like Asda and consumers, with potential implications for travel and economic activity in the coming weeks.
