The UK government has announced that approximately 345,000 households in Scotland will automatically receive a £150 energy rebate on their electricity bills starting from winter 2026/27. This represents a significant expansion of the Warm Home Discount scheme, with around 250,000 more households benefiting compared to the previous system.
Scheme Extended Until 2031
Labour Party Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh confirmed the extension of the Warm Home Discount scheme until 2031, providing families with certainty that support will continue every winter. She stated: “We are extending the Warm Home Discount scheme until 2031, giving families certainty that support will continue to be there every winter. These changes mean hundreds of thousands more families in Scotland will get help automatically with their energy bills.”
Automatic Payments Remove Barriers
Previously, fewer than 100,000 Scottish households received the discount automatically, with most required to apply through their energy supplier. The new system ensures automatic payments for eligible households, removing administrative barriers. The scheme currently supports low-income households and those receiving the guarantee credit element of Pension Credit.
Energy consumers minister Martin McCluskey emphasized that the changes would eliminate obstacles preventing eligible households from accessing support. He said families “deserve automatic access to energy bill support when they need it most” and that the extension would give millions “peace of mind” for the rest of the decade.
Positive Response from Consumer Groups
Sam Ghibaldan, chief executive of Consumer Scotland, welcomed the five-year extension and the shift to automatic payments, calling it “positive news for the many households that rely on the discount.” Citizens Advice Scotland also responded, with energy spokesperson Molly Shevlin noting that thousands of people across Scotland continue to face impossible choices between heating and debt. She described the situation as “unacceptable” and evidence that the energy market “is broken and needs radical reform.”
The government estimates that around 345,000 Scottish households will receive the Warm Home Discount automatically from winter 2026/27, marking a substantial increase from the previous figure of fewer than 100,000.
