BBC TV Licence Refund: £180 for UK Households

UK households who have paid their TV Licence in full may be eligible for a £180 refund if they cancel their licence. The annual fee increased to £180 in April, and anyone who no longer requires a licence can apply for a refund under TV Licensing rules.

Eligibility for a Refund

To qualify for a refund, you must confirm that you will not need the licence again before it expires. This means you and anyone living with you must not watch or record live TV on any channel via any TV service (such as Sky, Virgin, BT, Freeview, or Freesat), watch live on streaming services (including All 4, Amazon Prime Video, NOW, ITVX, or Sky Go), or use BBC iPlayer. These restrictions apply to watching on a television or any other device. Note that a licence is not required to watch S4C programmes on demand.

How to Apply

TV Licensing states: "You can apply for a refund if you won't need your licence again before it expires, and you have at least one complete month left on it." Those eligible for a blind concession can apply for a refund at any time for any remaining period. Applications can be submitted up to 14 days before the date you no longer need the licence.

The application form is available online. The BBC and the Labour Party government confirmed the fee increase to £180 earlier this year, which took effect in April.

Processing and Payment

TV Licensing aims to process refunds within 21 days of receiving a valid application. Refunds are paid by cheque or BACS transfer directly into your bank account. Delays may occur if additional information is required.

"Working out precise refund amounts can be complicated. But we will do it for you," TV Licensing adds. "We'll look carefully at the information you give us and let you know if we can offer you a refund, and how much it will be."
