How to Check Your Credit Balance

Customers should log into their online energy accounts to view their current credit balance. If the amount is significantly higher than one month's payment, it may be worth requesting a refund. For example, a household paying £150 per month with £500 in credit could claim £200 back while leaving enough for winter.

Thomas Drury, money saving expert at The Investors Centre, explained: "The point of a fixed direct debit is that you smooth out the cost across the year. If you claim back too much in summer, you may simply create a shortfall later when usage goes up again. That can lead to a higher direct debit, a catch-up bill, or pressure at exactly the wrong time."

When to Request a Refund

Drury added: "If your balance is climbing month after month, that suggests your direct debit may be set too high. That is when it is worth asking your supplier to review it." He advised that having around one month's payment in credit is a normal buffer, but two or three months' worth, especially heading into summer, warrants questioning.

For instance, a household paying £150 monthly with £100 in credit likely does not need to act, but one with £500 should investigate why the balance is so high. Customers can contact their supplier to request a refund or adjust their direct debit amount.

Key Considerations Before Claiming

It is always advisable not to empty accounts completely, as credit may be needed when energy costs rise later in the year. Checking balances now is timely, as the summer months often see the highest credit accumulation. By requesting a partial refund, households can access extra cash while ensuring they remain protected against winter bills.
