Electric vehicle (EV) drivers with two specific types of batteries are facing a car insurance hike, adding to the cost of living pressures. The battery is one of the most expensive components of an EV, and larger, longer-range batteries increase potential repair and replacement costs compared to smaller ones.
Why Larger Batteries Lead to Higher Premiums
Dick Lovett, a motoring expert, explains: "The cost of battery replacement or repair can also be more expensive in the case of physical damage caused by accidents, as the resulting maintenance work often requires specialist equipment." The experts issued a warning specifically about "larger" and "complex" batteries, stating: "Due to these risk factors, vehicles with larger or more complex batteries are seen as higher risk by insurers, and often incur higher premiums."
Expert Advice on Choosing the Right Battery
Jake Lambert, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, previously told the Express: "One of the risks for first-time EV buyers is 'range anxiety', which often drives motorists to choose a much larger battery than they actually need. However, bigger isn't always better. Larger batteries add more weight and power, which can push the vehicle into a higher insurance group and drive up premiums." He advises: "If you're primarily commuting short distances, a 30-50 kWh battery is often plenty - and it's one of the easiest ways to keep your insurance costs down from day one. Look for energy efficiency (miles per kWh) rather than just raw battery size."
How to Save on EV Insurance
Generally, buying electric car insurance tends to be more expensive than finding coverage for a petrol or diesel model. However, car insurance is still bespoke and flexible, and there are many ways to minimise expenses while ensuring your vehicle is covered. With the EV market growing rapidly, major insurers are taking notice and working to accommodate the increased demand for EV insurance in the UK. When researching insurance options, it pays to assess insurers methodically to find the best deal.
