HMRC's £83 Monthly Payment to UK Households Goes Unnoticed by Many

UK households could be missing out on a significant £1,000 per year payment from HMRC, with many completely unaware of this financial support. Patricia Ogunfeibo, founder and non-practising solicitor at tenant2owner, has issued a stark warning about this oversight.

Government Contribution Through Lifetime ISA

Patricia Ogunfeibo explains that numerous people don't realise they can receive just over £83 per month from the Government via HMRC through the Lifetime ISA, commonly known as LISA. This scheme represents free money that remains largely untapped by eligible individuals.

"I'm still shocked by how many aspiring buyers are simply unaware that the Government will contribute to their deposit through the LISA," said Patricia. "There's free money available and far too often it's just not being taken."

Alarming Statistics Reveal Awareness Gap

A recent survey commissioned by HMRC revealed troubling statistics about LISA awareness. The research found that 37% of people eligible for a LISA had never heard of the scheme. This means nearly four in ten individuals who could open one didn't even know it existed.

"That's really worrying," Patricia commented. "It also suggests the Government has failed to do enough to promote this valuable way to save."

Significant Impact on Home Buying Goals

The financial impact of this government top-up should not be underestimated, according to Patricia. For many prospective homeowners, the LISA contribution can substantially increase their monthly savings, potentially accelerating their journey toward a target deposit.

"For many people, it will significantly increase what they are putting aside each month, and that can get them to their target deposit far sooner," she explained. "Which means they get the keys to their first home far sooner."

Widespread Confusion and Lack of Understanding

Even among those who have heard of the LISA, confusion persists about how to access and utilize the scheme. Patricia noted that just last week she spoke with a first-time buyer who had no idea the LISA existed.

"And even if people have heard of it, they often don't understand how to take one out or the way it works," she said. "There's a lot of confusion."

Missing Financial Ally for First-Time Buyers

Patricia highlighted that while many prospective buyers turn to family and friends for deposit assistance, they often overlook the LISA as a valuable financial resource.

"Many people turn to their parents, grandparents and even friends when trying to grow their deposit, but the one friend many aren't turning to is the one called LISA," she observed.

The LISA can provide crucial assistance for first-time buyers who may not qualify for 100% loan-to-value mortgages or who have concerns about negative equity. Effectively, the government is offering up to £1,000 in free money annually toward deposits, yet this support remains underutilized due to insufficient awareness and understanding.
