Martin Lewis Highlights £252 Tax-Free Boost for Eligible UK Households
Financial guru Martin Lewis, through his Money Saving Expert (MSE) platform, has issued a timely reminder to UK households about a valuable tax-saving opportunity. Specifically, he advises that certain couples can claim an extra £252 tax-free this year by utilising the Marriage Tax Allowance scheme.
What Is the Marriage Tax Allowance?
The Marriage Tax Allowance is a fully legal HMRC scheme designed for married couples and those in civil partnerships. It allows a non-taxpaying partner to transfer 10% of their tax-free Personal Allowance to their tax-paying spouse, provided the recipient earns below the £50,270 threshold for the 40% tax bracket.
This arrangement results in a direct tax saving of £252 for the current tax year. Importantly, the scheme is not limited to working couples; it can benefit scenarios where one partner is a retired state pensioner, has taken time off for childcare, or works insufficient hours to exceed the £12,570 Personal Allowance limit.
Eligibility Criteria Explained
To qualify for the Marriage Tax Allowance, couples must meet specific conditions:
- You must be legally married or in a civil partnership; cohabiting couples are not eligible.
- Both individuals must have been born on or after 6 April 1935.
- One partner must be a non-taxpayer, earning less than £12,570 in the 2026/27 tax year (with optimal benefit requiring earnings of £11,310 or less).
- The other partner must be a basic 20% rate taxpayer, earning under £50,270 (or £43,662 in Scotland).
Higher or additional-rate taxpayers are not eligible for this allowance.
Potential for Backdated Claims
Martin Lewis emphasises that the benefits extend beyond the current year. Eligible couples can backdate their claim for up to four previous tax years, potentially adding a further £1,008 to their savings. Once registered, the allowance is applied automatically each year, providing ongoing financial relief.
Despite these advantages, MSE notes that hundreds of thousands of eligible couples are still missing out on this opportunity. Lewis urges all qualifying households to check their eligibility promptly to avoid losing out on this tax-free boost.
The scheme underscores the importance of reviewing personal tax arrangements, especially as the new tax year commences, to maximise household income legally and efficiently.
