Martin Lewis Urges Action to Counter April's Major Bill Hikes
Money saving expert Martin Lewis has issued crucial advice to UK households as significant price rises loom across four key areas at the start of the new tax year. Water, mobile, broadband, and council tax bills are all set to increase on April 1, prompting Lewis to emphasize the urgency of taking proactive steps now to mitigate financial impact.
Water Bills Set to Rise by Up to 5.4%
From April 1, the average water bill will climb by 5.4%, translating to an additional £33 annually for many consumers. Lewis highlighted a potential solution for residents in England and Wales, noting that water meters are available free of charge. He recommended using the Consumer Council for Water's website, ccw.org.uk, to access a calculator that determines whether switching to a meter could yield savings.
For individuals in properties where meters are not feasible, such as flats with shared piping, Lewis advised requesting an 'assessed charge'. This alternative calculates an estimated bill based on meter usage, potentially offering a lower rate than standard bills. If the assessed charge proves cheaper, households can secure reduced payments without physical meter installation.
Council Tax Increases Vary Across Regions
Council tax rates are also ascending, with hikes of approximately 5% in England, 4% in Wales, and a range of 4% to 10% in Scotland. Lewis pointed out that numerous households may qualify for discounts, including those living alone, students, carers, residents with severe mental impairments, or households with individuals under 18.
Additionally, an estimated 400,000 households in England and Scotland might be in incorrect council tax bands, potentially overpaying. Lewis encouraged residents to review their banding to ensure accuracy and avoid unnecessary expenses.
Mobile Contracts Face Monthly Increases
Mobile contracts are not immune to the upward trend, with prices expected to rise by around £2.50 per month starting next week. Lewis outlined a clear strategy for consumers: first, text the word INFO to 85075 for free to check contract status and any early termination fees. Once informed, he urged using price comparison sites to identify better deals available in the market, enabling swift switching if advantageous.
Broadband Bills Follow Similar Pattern
Broadband services will experience comparable hikes, as Lewis explained. He emphasized that the most cost-effective deals are predominantly found on comparison websites, advising households to actively search these platforms to secure savings. By comparing offers, consumers can potentially offset the impending increases and maintain manageable monthly expenses.
Lewis concluded by stressing that immediate action is essential, as delaying could result in missing out on current lower rates before the April adjustments take full effect.
