NatWest Divests Mentor Consultancy Business in Strategic Shift
NatWest Group, a prominent UK-focused banking organisation serving over 20 million customers, has made a significant strategic move by selling its Mentor consultancy business. This marks the first time since 1997 that the bank has offloaded this service, which has been a key component of its operations for nearly three decades.
Details of the Sale to Empowering People Group
The Mentor business, which specialises in employment law, human resources, health and safety, and environmental management consultancy, will be acquired by the Empowering People Group. This acquisition is backed by Limerston Capital and is anticipated to finalise in the third or early fourth quarter of 2026.
Robert Begbie, the Commercial and Institutional CEO at NatWest, emphasised the importance of this transaction. He stated, "This sale represents a crucial step in our strategy to simplify and concentrate on what is most important to our customers and colleagues. It also heralds an exciting new chapter for Mentor as it joins a specialist business with complementary services."
Begbie further expressed confidence that Mentor will continue to flourish under the ownership of Empowering People Group, highlighting NatWest's intention to maintain a strong relationship with both Mentor and the new owners moving forward.
Strategic Alignment and Future Prospects
Rena Christou, Group CEO of Empowering People Group, commented on the acquisition, noting that her organisation has built a robust reputation over more than two decades as a trusted HR partner for large and complex entities. She explained, "Mentor is a natural and complementary fit, with aligned values, proven track records, and a shared commitment to high standards. We are enthusiastic about the opportunity to create something even stronger and deliver greater impact to the market."
Christou added that the merger will result in a broader, more comprehensive proposition, combining enterprise-scale HR capability with deep expertise in health, safety, and environmental management across the SME market.
Historical Context and Business Impact
Mentor was originally launched in 1997 to assist businesses in navigating legal and regulatory changes, maintaining compliance, and mitigating risks through instructor-led advisory services in employment law and HR. NatWest Group, with its extensive network including branches in Birmingham, operates across retail, commercial, and private banking sectors.
This divestment reflects NatWest's ongoing efforts to streamline its operations and focus on core banking activities, potentially influencing its service offerings for its vast customer base of 20 million individuals and businesses.
