Ofgem Urges UK Households to Reclaim Energy Credit

Energy watchdog Ofgem has issued a direct call to action for UK households, urging them to reclaim any credit held on their energy accounts with providers. The regulator made the appeal via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting the importance of understanding account balances and the process for obtaining refunds.

Understanding Energy Account Credit

A credit balance on an energy account occurs when a household has paid more than their actual usage to a supplier, meaning the supplier owes them money. Alternatively, some consumers intentionally build up credit to spread energy costs evenly throughout the year, particularly as usage typically decreases in summer compared to winter.

Common Reasons for Credit Build-Up

Several factors can lead to credit accumulation on energy accounts:

  • Fixed Direct Debits: Paying a set amount monthly via direct debit, even when energy use fluctuates seasonally, often results in summer credit that reduces in winter.
  • Billing Estimations: Suppliers may overestimate bills if they lack regular, accurate meter readings, leading to overpayment.
  • Payment Timing: Discrepancies between billing cycles and payment schedules, such as quarterly usage calculations with monthly payments, can create credit.
  • Upfront Payments: Some suppliers require an initial payment when starting a contract, maintaining a credit balance.
  • Prepayment Meters: Balances remain in credit until used, with regular meter readings helping prevent excessive build-up.

Credit on Closed Accounts

Credit may also exist on closed accounts, such as after switching suppliers, moving house, or settling the estate of a deceased relative. In these cases, suppliers are obligated to take steps to return any unclaimed money to consumers.

Ofgem's message emphasizes: "Do you have credit on your energy account? It's good to learn how account balances work, why it might be a good idea to build up credit and how to get a refund if you think your current or previous supplier owes you money." This initiative aims to ensure households are aware of their rights and can proactively manage their energy finances.
