Sainsbury's Overtakes Asda as UK's Cheapest Supermarket for Petrol
The RAC has announced a significant shift in the UK's supermarket fuel market, with Sainsbury's now selling the cheapest petrol on average, overtaking long-time leader Asda. This update comes from the RAC's latest fuel price monitoring initiative, which tracks costs at major retailers across the country.
Latest Fuel Price Rankings
According to the study released on Tuesday, March 31, Sainsbury's petrol averages 146.9p per litre, making it the most affordable option for drivers. Asda, which has numerous stores in Birmingham and nationwide, came in second with an average price of 147.1p per litre.
Interestingly, Asda displayed the widest price range among supermarkets, with its lowest pump price recorded at 165.7p and the highest at 185.9p per litre. This variability highlights the importance of checking local station prices before filling up.
Morrisons ranked at the bottom of the RAC's list, selling petrol at an average of 149p per litre, positioning it as the most expensive among the major supermarket chains surveyed.
RAC Fuel Watch Initiative
The RAC's Fuel Watch program continuously monitors petrol and diesel prices at key supermarkets including Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons, along with other fuel brands. This initiative aims to provide transparent, up-to-date information to help consumers make informed decisions and potentially save money on fuel costs.
This price shift occurs against a backdrop of broader economic and political discussions. Recently, Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer emphasized maintaining Britain's stance on international conflicts, while Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper plans to host meetings to address global shipping route disruptions.
Sir Keir warned that international tensions could impact the UK's future, but expressed confidence in the country's resilience. He also highlighted opportunities for strengthening partnerships with European allies to bolster security and address living cost concerns.
As fuel prices remain a critical factor for household budgets, the RAC's findings offer valuable insights for drivers seeking the best deals at the pump.
