A cherished Birmingham cafe is set to serve its final meals this weekend following the heartbreaking death of its co-owner, leaving the local community devastated.
Heartbreaking Decision Forces Closure
The Old Dresser Cafe on Bearwood Road in Smethwick will close permanently on Sunday, November 23, after co-owner Robert Zdrojek announced he could not continue without his husband and business partner Richard Strugala.
Richard Strugala passed away from cancer on October 24 at just 52 years old, leaving behind a legacy of eight years running the popular establishment with his partner Robert, 58.
A Dream Built on Love and Hard Work
In an emotional statement, Robert explained that the cafe had been Richard's dream, describing how his late husband had poured his heart and soul into the business since its inception.
The couple had created a unique dining spot that became a firm favourite among locals, known for serving both British and Polish cuisine at reasonable prices.
Their dedication to quality had earned them significant recognition, including a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence, a Travellers Choice Award, and an impressive five-star rating on the travel platform.
Community Loses a Treasured Gathering Place
Robert's poignant Facebook message expressed his heartbreak at the loss and gratitude toward their loyal customers.
"I'm heartbroken by his loss and want to express my sincere gratitude for the years of support and loyalty from our wonderful customers," he wrote.
He added that it had been their honour to serve the community and that he would cherish the memories created within the cafe's walls.
The property has already been listed for sale, marking the end of an era for Bearwood Road's dining scene and leaving regular patrons mourning the loss of both a beloved business owner and their favourite local spot.
