Birmingham's Beloved Indonesian Cafe Ngopi Bids Final Farewell After Resilient Comeback
In a heartfelt announcement, the unique family-run Indonesian coffee roastery Ngopi has permanently closed its Birmingham branch, marking the end of an emotional journey that saw it fight back from a sudden shutdown last year. Owner Elmira Hamdi has spoken openly about the challenges faced, leaving the city's coffee lovers and Indonesian community mourning the loss.
From Sudden Closure to a Brief Resurgence
Ngopi was forced to close its original location in Priory Square in March 2025 due to fire safety concerns, an event that coincided with Eid and created significant fear and uncertainty for the business. The cafe, which had become a cherished home-from-home for Indonesian Brummies, immediately began searching for a new venue to continue serving its loyal customers.
After a determined effort, Ngopi found a new home inside Skratch Golf on Ludgate Hill in the Jewellery Quarter, moving in at the end of June 2025. This allowed the cafe to operate alongside its London spot, offering a glimmer of hope to the community that had supported it through difficult times.
Emotional Goodbye and Future Plans
On Monday, March 30, 2026, Ngopi addressed its customers with a poignant message, stating that the decision to close was made with heavy hearts. The announcement highlighted the journey from moving out of their own place to adjusting to a new one, emphasizing that while it may not be the ending everyone imagined, it was seen as the best step forward for the business.
In the statement, Ngopi expressed deep gratitude to all Brummies for their endless support and love, acknowledging that they couldn't have persevered without it. The cafe hinted at future adventures, suggesting a shift towards events, pop-ups, and festivals rather than a permanent physical location.
Community Reaction and Lasting Impact
The closure has sparked an outpouring of sadness from the Birmingham community. Customer Michael Wolters exclaimed, Noooooooo! Don’t leave us in Brum without Ngopi! while GRNDConsultancy commented on Instagram, You will be thoroughly missed. These responses underscore the cafe's significant role in the local cultural and social landscape.
Ngopi's story is one of resilience and community spirit, from battling back after the Priory Square closure to finding a temporary haven in the Jewellery Quarter. As the cafe moves on to new ventures, its legacy as a beloved spot for Indonesian coffee and camaraderie in Birmingham will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of many.
