Birmingham Celebrity Chef Glynn Purnell Announces Closure of The Mount Pub
In a significant development for Birmingham's culinary scene, BBC star chef Glynn Purnell has confirmed the closure of The Mount pub, describing it as an "incredibly difficult decision." The establishment, located in Henley Arden, will shut its doors permanently on Sunday, March 15, 2026, after Purnell admitted it is "no longer financially viable." This move marks the end of a four-year tenure that saw the pub gain recognition in the Michelin Guide 2024.
Financial Challenges Force Closure Despite Michelin Recognition
Despite its prestigious feature in the Michelin Guide 2024, The Mount has struggled to remain sustainable in the current hospitality landscape. Purnell expressed his deep affection for the venue, calling it a "special place" with a "brilliant team" and "fantastic guests" who supported the pub from its inception. However, he highlighted the increasing challenges facing the industry, stating that despite everyone's hard work, continuing operations was simply not feasible.
In a heartfelt statement, Purnell said, "After four wonderful years, the very tough decision has been made to close The Mount. I've genuinely loved my time at the pub—it's been a special place with a brilliant team and fantastic guests who have supported us from day one." He added, "The hospitality landscape has become increasingly challenging, and despite everyone's hard work, it's simply not sustainable to continue."
Transition and Future Plans for Purnell's Ventures
As part of the closure process, staff members are being supported, and all suppliers will receive payment, ensuring a responsible transition. Meanwhile, The Bulls Head pub in Wootton Wawen has confirmed it will take over The Mount, with owners Martin and Omm Peel praising the venue as "the most amazing pub" in Henley. On social media, The Bulls Head posted, "In the heart of Henley's High Street conservation area, The Mount has been beautifully restored and furnished, to the credit of the owners and their team. We think it's the most amazing pub, restaurant and garden venue Henley has to offer."
Looking ahead, Glynn Purnell will now focus his efforts on his other culinary ventures, including Trillium and Plates by Purnell's in Birmingham, as well as The Wood Norton in Evesham. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and commitment shown during his time at The Mount, wishing the owners success in the future. Purnell stated, "I'm hugely grateful for the opportunity and for the commitment shown throughout. I wish the owners every success for the future. I'll now be focusing my time on my other ventures and I look forward to welcoming guests there."
