American Family Entertainment Giant Chuck E. Cheese Targets Birmingham for UK Expansion
Plans have been submitted to bring the iconic American family entertainment and restaurant chain Chuck E. Cheese to Birmingham for the very first time. The brand, famous for combining fast-food dining with children's amusement arcades, is seeking planning permission to occupy a unit at the Star City leisure complex in Nechells.
Revitalizing Vacant Space at Major Leisure Destination
The application, submitted by the Star City Trustees, proposes converting the former Genting Casino unit (Units 5 and 6) into a new Chuck E. Cheese outlet. This forms part of a larger scheme to reactivate underused space at the site, which also includes plans for a SuperPark family adventure park in the adjacent Unit 28.
The combined floorspace for these developments totals approximately 4,157 square metres, with an additional 2,182 square metres at mezzanine level. The proposals represent a significant investment aimed at diversifying and strengthening the leisure offer at Star City, which first opened in July 2000 on the site of the former Nechells Power Station.
A Global Brand with a Local Impact
Founded in San Jose, California in 1977, Chuck E. Cheese operates over 600 "fun centres" across 45 U.S. states and 17 international locations. The brand is renowned for hosting around half a million birthday parties annually. Its venues typically feature:
- Casual dining offering pizza, chicken wings, fries, and desserts
- Extensive arcade games and amusement rides
- Interactive play zones including ball pits and crawl tubes
- Live musical shows and entertainment
The Birmingham location would mark one of the chain's first ventures into the United Kingdom and would be the inaugural site in the West Midlands region. This expansion follows the company's announcement last year of a multi-unit agreement to enter the UK market, representing its first move into Europe.
Job Creation and Economic Benefits
If approved, the development promises substantial economic benefits for the local area. The planning statement indicates that Chuck E. Cheese alone would create 45 new jobs—15 full-time and 30 part-time positions. The accompanying SuperPark development would add a further 26 jobs.
The statement emphasizes the importance of this investment, particularly for the Nechells ward, which reportedly has the lowest average income among Birmingham's 69 wards. By bringing currently inactive floorspace back into economic use, the development aims to generate increased local wages and gross value added to the area.
Brand Philosophy and Market Adaptation
Chuck E. Cheese operates under the motto "Where A Kid Can Be A Kid" and has recently invested $300 million in remodeling its venues worldwide. The company emphasizes creating safe, fun environments primarily for children aged 3-8, while allowing parents to relax.
Mario Centola, COO of Chuck E. Cheese International, previously stated: "Chuck E. Cheese is an incredible global brand that brings families together across cultures through the universal language of fun. We're thrilled to bring our unique magic for family fun to the UK."
Alistair Burnett, Managing Director for the UK expansion, added: "Bringing Chuck E. Cheese to the UK is not just a business move. We will be reimagining family entertainment in this market, and Chuck E. Cheese is the perfect brand to lead that transformation."
Planning Details and Next Steps
The planning application includes proposals for a new glazed entrance and shopfront on the eastern side of Unit 28 for the SuperPark development, with the entrance wrapping around to the southern side. Additionally, 2,148 square metres of mezzanine floor space would be removed from within the three units to accommodate the new layouts.
A spokesperson for Chuck E. Cheese commented: "Our franchise partner is actively exploring a variety of locations and evaluating the suitability of a variety of locations for Chuck E. Cheese throughout the market. They have already identified several potential locations and are vetting the various space allocations and permitting requirements."
The development aims to capitalize on Star City's existing infrastructure, which includes approximately 38,000 square metres of leisure space and 2,500 car parking spaces. The planning statement concludes that these proposals will "reinvigorate an underutilised part of a popular leisure asset in Birmingham, ensuring its long-term success" by creating an attractive destination that improves the site's vitality and viability.
