In a unique culinary collaboration, easyJet and easyJet holidays have joined forces with bakery chain Greggs to introduce a limited-edition sausage roll trolley service on flights. The initiative, launching today, features free Greggs sausage rolls accompanied by special destination-inspired dipping sauces for passengers departing from Newcastle Airport on all international easyJet flights.
A Taste of Holiday Destinations in the Sky
The new dipping sauces, dubbed "Destination Dips," draw inspiration from popular easyJet holiday locations across Europe and North Africa. Each sauce offers a creative twist on classic flavors from these regions, designed to enhance the beloved Geordie pastry experience at 30,000 feet.
The Destination Dips Collection
The limited-edition sauce range includes five distinctive flavors:
- Silky Affogato (Italy): A rich blend of deep roasted coffee, decadent cocoa, and aromatic vanilla bean, capturing the essence of Italian indulgence.
- Tangy Tarte Tatin (France): Featuring comforting caramelised apple and warm cinnamon with a delicate hint of thyme, offering a sophisticated patisserie classic.
- Spicy Harissa Ketchup (Tunisia): A vibrant and exotic sweet-and-spicy ketchup combining rich tomato, sweet date, and tangy pomegranate.
- Snappy Sangria (Spain): Bursting with red wine, zesty orange, and tangy cranberry, embodying the vibrant spirit of Spanish sangria.
- Saucy Kebab (Turkey): An aromatic and authentic sauce with zesty lemon, tangy vinegar, and smoky paprika, delivering a total Turkish delight.
Celebrating a Major Newcastle Base Expansion
This culinary launch coincides with easyJet establishing its 11th UK base at Newcastle Airport, following previous openings at London Southend Airport and Birmingham. The new base will host three easyJet aircraft and support approximately 1,200 jobs, including 140 direct roles for pilots and cabin crew.
From today, easyJet is operating 86 flights per week to 22 leisure destinations across Europe and North Africa, representing an 85% increase compared to last summer. New routes include Antalya, Corfu, Dalaman, Enfidha, Faro, Lisbon, Malta, Nice, Prague, Reus, Rhodes, Rome, Sharm-El-Sheikh, and Tenerife.
The expansion provides over 800,000 seats for holiday customers this summer, with package options including flights, hotel accommodations, 23kg luggage allowances, and transfers for beach breaks.
Community Engagement and Economic Impact
Throughout the week, easyJet cabin crew have been serving the sausage rolls and dipping sauces at prominent North East landmarks, including the Tyne Bridge, St James' Park, and the Angel of the North. A special cabin crew service will also be available in Newcastle city centre, allowing locals to sample the limited-edition sauces.
Garry Wilson, easyJet holidays CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: "We're thrilled to be launching a new base in Newcastle, driven by strong demand in the region. Partnering with Greggs, a true Geordie icon and one of the city's most famous exports, felt like the perfect way to celebrate our arrival. Offering sausage rolls onboard and in the streets is our way of thanking the North East as we continue to make travel from their local airport easy and affordable."
Hannah Squirrell, Customer Director at Greggs, added: "As a business born and bred in the North East, we're excited to partner with easyJet to mark their new base launch in Newcastle. This is a fantastic opportunity for the local community, and we can't think of a better way to celebrate than with a Sausage Roll!"
Nick Jones, Newcastle Airport CEO, highlighted the broader significance: "The launch of easyJet's new base marks a major milestone for Newcastle Airport and the wider North East region. With flights to 22 destinations and over 800,000 seats available this summer, it provides substantial economic benefits through high-quality job creation and increased inbound tourism. easyJet's investment is a huge vote of confidence in the Airport and the North East, playing a vital role as we prepare for our busiest year on record, expecting six million passengers."
