Foreign Office Issues Updated Travel Warning for Saudi Arabia
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has modified its travel advice for Saudi Arabia as ongoing conflict in the Gulf region intensifies. This update comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran, the USA, and Israel, prompting urgent safety measures for British citizens abroad.
Specific Guidance for British Nationals
The FCDO now advises against all travel to certain parts of Saudi Arabia and recommends avoiding non-essential travel to other areas. On Tuesday, March 17, the office released new information urging increased caution due to reports of continued missile and drone attacks in the Eastern Province and Riyadh Province.
Key safety instructions include:
- Stay indoors or seek the nearest safe building and take hard cover if advised to take shelter.
- Prefer interior stairwells or rooms with minimal external walls or windows for added protection.
- Follow local authority advice on staying safe, as risks may vary across different locations in Saudi Arabia.
The warning highlights the risk of shrapnel from intercepted missiles and drones falling across the region, which could cause significant disruption and danger.
Background of Regional Tensions
This travel advisory update follows recent escalations in the Middle East. Iran’s supreme national security council confirmed the death of its chief, Ali Larijani, after Israel stated it had killed him in an airstrike. The council announced his martyrdom on Tuesday evening, noting that his son and bodyguards also perished in the incident.
In response, Iran’s army chief, Amir Hatami, threatened a decisive and regrettable retaliation for the killing, further fueling regional instability. The FCDO’s revised guidance aims to protect UK tourists and residents in Saudi Arabia from potential fallout as these conflicts continue to unfold.
