Foreign Office Issues Severe Warning to UK Tourists Visiting South Africa
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a stark new warning for British tourists planning trips to South Africa, highlighting significant safety and legal risks that could result in severe consequences.
Updated Safety and Security Guidance
In its latest travel advice, the FCDO has shared updated information specifically concerning road attacks to and from Cape Town International Airport. The warning states there has been a notable increase in violent crime and targeted incidents involving visitors driving hired rental vehicles in the area.
Key recommendations for travellers include:
- Stick to the M3 and N2 highways, avoiding the R300 route.
- Use the designated 'airport approach road' (exit 16 on the N2) rather than taking Borcherd’s Quarry Road towards Nyanga.
- Plan your journey in advance and discuss it with a trusted local contact.
- Avoid following GPS navigation that diverts you from main roads.
Severe Penalties for Drug Offences
The FCDO also delivered a critical update regarding cannabis and illegal drug laws in South Africa. While the personal consumption of cannabis is considered legal under certain conditions, all other drug possession, use, or smuggling remains strictly illegal.
"British nationals have been arrested for attempting to carry illegal drugs, including cocaine, cannabis, and khat, to the UK," the FCDO noted. The office emphasised that individuals should expect long jail sentences and heavy fines for possessing, using, or smuggling illegal drugs, even when merely transiting through the airport.
Airports in South Africa are equipped with advanced technology and security systems capable of detecting illegal items, and this technology is routinely used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.
South Africa as a Tourist Destination
Despite these warnings, South Africa continues to be a popular tourist destination, attracting approximately 9 million arrivals last year. Its appeal is driven by stunning natural landscapes, world-renowned wildlife safaris, and acclaimed wine regions.
Key attractions for visitors include Cape Town, the Kruger National Park, and the scenic Garden Route, which remain major draws for international travellers seeking adventure and natural beauty.
