England Pubs Granted Extended Hours for 2026 World Cup Matches

Pubs across England are set to benefit from new closing time regulations starting in June 2026, specifically introduced for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The tournament will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring matches with late kick-off times that align with UK viewing hours.

Extended Opening Hours for Football Fans

Under the revised rules, pubs will be permitted to remain open until 2am to accommodate England supporters watching the games. This initiative is spearheaded by Labour Party Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who emphasized the importance of allowing fans to enjoy matches in community venues without having to leave early.

Matches in the round of 16 with kick-offs between 5pm and 9pm UK time will see pubs staying open later, while games in the round of 32, which start as late as 1am, will also be covered by these extended hours. Mahmood stated, "If our boys are on the pitch, we want our fans to stay in the pub. So we’re giving pubs and bars an open goal to serve punters long after the last penalty hits the net. We won’t have fans coming home before football does."

Industry Support and Economic Boost

Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, welcomed the move, highlighting the unique role of pubs in fostering community spirit during major sporting events. She said, "There’s no place quite like the pub to cheer on our brilliant teams, and being able to open for longer means people can come together, boost community spirit and enjoy a summer of sport."

McClarkin added that reducing regulatory burdens is a positive step for the sector, but it should be accompanied by efforts to lower costs so that local pubs can continue to serve as gathering spots for national celebrations.

Kate Nicholls, Chair of UKHospitality, echoed this sentiment, predicting that pubs and bars will be packed with supporters cheering on the home nations. She described the World Cup as the "centrepiece of this year’s summer of sport," anticipating a significant boost for the hospitality industry.

World Cup Match Schedule for UK Viewers

The 2026 World Cup features several matches with late kick-off times that will benefit from the extended pub hours. Scotland's Group C games include:

  • June 14 vs Haiti in Boston at 2am UK time
  • June 19 vs Morocco in Boston at 11pm UK time
  • June 24 vs Brazil in Miami at 11pm UK time

England's Group D schedule is as follows:

  • June 17 vs Croatia in Dallas at 9pm UK time
  • June 23 vs Ghana in Boston at 9pm UK time
  • June 27 vs Panama in New York-New Jersey at 10pm UK time

These late starts make the extended pub hours particularly valuable for fans wanting to watch the games in a social setting. The government's decision aims to enhance the viewing experience while supporting local businesses during the tournament.
