UK Tourists Face £700 Fines for Vapes in Thailand

Foreign Office Updates Thailand Travel Advice with Strict Vape Warnings

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a crucial update to its travel guidance for Thailand, a popular holiday destination for British tourists. The revised advice highlights severe penalties for carrying or using vaping devices, with fines potentially reaching £700.

New Regulations on Smoking and E-Cigarettes

In an official update on Tuesday, March 17, the FCDO posted new information regarding smoking and e-cigarettes on its 'Warnings and insurance' and 'Safety and security' pages. The office explicitly states that it is illegal to possess or use any vape, e-cigarette, pod, e-liquid, or heat-not-burn device in Thailand.

Offences can result in confiscation, heavy fines typically ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 Thai baht, detention, and court proceedings. With 30,000 Thai baht equating to approximately £700, this represents a significant financial risk for travellers. The FCDO emphasises that there are no exceptions for tourists or personal use, and individuals may be required to remain in Thailand until legal cases are resolved.

Comprehensive Smoking Bans and Cannabis Risks

Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public places, indoor workplaces, and public transport across Thailand. Additionally, outdoor bans apply to facilities for exercise, sports training, and competitions, as well as public parks, zoological parks, amusement parks, children’s playgrounds, and markets.

The FCDO also warns about cannabis, noting that British nationals have been caught carrying it out of Thailand, leading to arrests even when transiting through airports in other countries. International airports often employ advanced technology and security measures to detect illegal items, which may include scanning the baggage of transiting passengers.

Broader Tobacco Regulations

Thailand enforces a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising and promotion, with limited exceptions for reverse brand stretching and unpaid depiction. While sponsorship by the tobacco industry is permitted, certain forms of publicity for such sponsorship are prohibited.

The law further restricts the sale of tobacco products, banning vending machines, internet sales, and sales in schools, playgrounds, and healthcare facilities. This underscores the country's stringent approach to tobacco control, which now extends to vaping products.

Given these updates, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Thailand, urging UK tourists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to local laws to avoid severe penalties.
