UK Tourists in Gulf Face 'Very Frightening' Tornado Warning

UK Tourists in Gulf Region Issued Urgent Weather Warning

UK tourists currently visiting popular holiday destinations in Dubai, Egypt, and Qatar have been issued a severe and alarming new weather warning. Forecasters are predicting that tornadoes and what has been described as "biblical rain" are set to threaten the United Arab Emirates and various Gulf states, creating potentially dangerous conditions for travelers.

Severe Storms and Flash Flood Threats

The National Centre of Meteorology has indicated that the peak of this extreme weather event is expected from Thursday night into Friday morning. Residents and tourists alike should prepare for heavy rainfall, powerful winds, thunder, and hail battering the Middle East. Of particular concern is the risk of flash floods in major urban centers like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, cities that have already experienced significant disruptions over the past month.

According to reports from The Washington Post, some areas could receive an entire year's worth of precipitation in just a three-day period. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Egypt are anticipated to bear the brunt of these intense storms, which have prompted local authorities to take immediate action.

Local Responses and Safety Measures

In response to the forecast, Qatari authorities have issued specific guidance, stating: "Employers are advised to adhere to occupational safety and health guidelines and to provide suitable protective measures to safeguard workers." Meanwhile, in Egypt, schools have been forced to close as Cairo braces for the incoming severe weather.

The situation has been described as "very frightening" by locals, with videos circulating on social media platforms like the UAE Labours channel showing heavy hail impacting the region. An unofficial weather forecaster in the UAE, Howard Townsend, who has a substantial online following, noted that the weather system moving through the Gulf is particularly "volatile."

Expert Forecasts and Tornado Risks

Jason Nicholls, the lead international forecaster for AccuWeather, provided a detailed analysis to The National. He explained, "A strong area of low pressure aloft will enhance the coverage of the precipitation Thursday into Friday with a good chance for hail, damaging wind gusts, isolated tornadoes and areas of flash flooding."

Mr. Nicholls further highlighted that a tornado was already reported along the coast of Saudi Arabia near Bahrain on Monday, and he warned that "the ingredients for a tornado will remain in place" throughout the week. The National Centre of Meteorology forecaster added that rain is expected to begin in the western areas before moving across the country overnight, with patterns that could change but will include periods of heavy rain and strong winds.

Howard Townsend emphasized the severity for specific locations, stating, "The next few days – Wednesday until Saturday morning – are going to see extensive heavy showers with some coming in overnight in many areas. The Gulf coastline, especially Dubai and the Northern Emirates, will see the worst of this." This warning underscores the critical need for UK tourists and all residents in these regions to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this extreme weather event.
