UK Foreign Office Issues Indefinite Travel Warning for Bolivia Amid Transport Strikes
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued an indefinite travel warning for Bolivia, specifically targeting the city and department of La Paz, due to ongoing public transport strikes that have severely disrupted transportation networks. The warning, updated on Thursday, March 26, highlights significant challenges for UK tourists and travelers in the region.
Impact on Public Transport and Airport Access
According to the FCDO, an indefinite strike is currently affecting public transport across La Paz, leading to major disruptions. Access to the airport is notably impacted, with the cable car system being the only form of public transport still operating. However, queues for the cable car are reported to be extremely long, causing further inconvenience for travelers.
The main bus terminal in La Paz is closed, and intercity transport to other parts of Bolivia has been suspended. This suspension means that travel between cities is largely halted, compounding the difficulties for those trying to navigate the country.
Fuel Shortages and Driving Concerns
In addition to the transport strikes, Bolivia is experiencing regular petrol and diesel shortages across the country. Long queues are forming at service stations as people anticipate fuel deliveries, which can affect bus services between cities and reduce the availability of public transport in La Paz and other major urban areas.
The FCDO advises that if planning to drive in Bolivia, travelers must account for these fuel shortages. They can make long-distance travel challenging and potentially strand drivers for several days while waiting for fuel. The office also reminds UK drivers that they need both a 1949 international driving permit (IDP) and their UK driving licence to drive in Bolivia, and IDPs cannot be purchased outside the UK.
Safety and Travel Recommendations
The FCDO has updated its 'Warnings and insurance' and 'Safety and security' pages with this new information, urging UK tourists to exercise caution and plan accordingly. Travelers are encouraged to monitor the situation closely, consider alternative arrangements, and ensure they have adequate travel insurance that covers such disruptions.
This indefinite warning underscores the importance of staying informed about local conditions when traveling abroad, especially in regions experiencing political or social unrest that can affect transportation and safety.
