Wetherspoons Cuts Guinness Price for St Patrick's Day

Wetherspoons Announces Major St Patrick's Day Drink Promotions

Wetherspoon pubs throughout the United Kingdom are preparing for St Patrick's Day on Tuesday, March 17, with significant price reductions on a selection of Irish-themed beverages. Customers can purchase a pint of Guinness for just £3.49 at participating locations, marking a special celebration for the annual event.

Exclusive Beer and Additional Drink Offers

In addition to the Guinness deal, Wetherspoons will serve an exclusive beer brewed specifically for the chain. Brogue Irish Red, produced by Rye River Brewing Company, will be available for £1.99 per pint. This beer features a 4.4% alcohol by volume and is characterized by malty flavors with hints of biscuit, caramel, and dark fruits.

The promotions extend to spirits as well. Jameson Irish Whiskey will be offered as a single measure with a mixer included for £3.49. Furthermore, a Baby Guinness shot containing 50ml of Kahlua coffee liqueur topped with Baileys will be priced at £3.99.

Terms and Exclusions for the Promotion

Wetherspoon marketing executive James Vaughan emphasized the value of these St Patrick's Day drink prices, stating the company looks forward to welcoming customers to celebrate. However, pubs with existing prices lower than the promotional rates will continue to sell drinks at their usual prices. Notably, airport sites and the Birmingham NEC location are excluded from this St Patrick's Day offer.

Political Context and Industry Support

This promotional activity follows recent comments from Wetherspoon founder Sir Tim Martin, who has encouraged other hospitality industry leaders to support Reform UK's policies for the pub sector. These proposals include plans to reduce beer tax significantly.

Sir Tim Martin, chairman of JD Wetherspoon, argued that the suggested changes would help achieve tax parity with supermarkets, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of pubs. Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, recently announced a series of measures aimed at supporting the struggling hospitality industry.

Key proposals from Reform UK include:

  • A 10% reduction in VAT for the hospitality sector
  • A 10% cut in beer duty
  • Reversal of the recent increase in employers' national insurance contributions for the sector
  • Gradual removal of business rates for all pubs

In a detailed stock exchange filing, Sir Tim asserted that these initiatives would fundamentally transform the pub industry's competitive landscape. He highlighted that eliminating the tax differential between supermarkets and hospitality businesses could help pubs recover lost trade and restore margins.
