Emerson Royal has admitted he is flattered by Aston Villa's pursuit of him this summer, though the 27-year-old right-back remains committed to Flamengo for the time being. Villa manager Unai Emery is eager to strengthen competition for Matty Cash and has identified the Brazilian as a prime target.
Transfer Talks Underway
Negotiations between Aston Villa and Flamengo over a potential deal for Emerson began in June, but the current status of discussions remains unclear. Emerson only joined the Rio de Janeiro club in July 2024, making a swift departure unlikely without significant progress.
Speaking after Flamengo's 2-0 friendly victory over Lausanne-Sport, Emerson addressed the speculation. "As I said, until nothing is decided, my head is always at Flamengo," he told Itatiaia Esporte. "I am very happy to receive this offer, as it shows that my work is being done well. My head is at Flamengo, but I don't know about the future."
Emerson's Career Path
Emerson previously spent three seasons at Tottenham Hotspur from 2021 to 2024, making 101 appearances but failing to consistently impress. He joined Spurs from Barcelona after an impressive stint at Real Betis, where he was regarded as one of Europe's most promising right-backs. His career has since taken him back to Brazil, where he has rediscovered his form.
Villa's Right-Back Options
Matty Cash has been Villa's primary right-back under Emery, but the manager is keen to add depth. Interestingly, AC Milan showed interest in Cash during the summer of 2024 before ultimately signing Emerson instead. Should Villa secure Emerson, it would provide strong competition and potentially allow Cash to feature in more advanced roles.
