Marks and Spencer, commonly known as M&S, which operates branches in Birmingham, has discontinued its mobile Shop & Scan application after nearly a decade of service. The decision has left many shoppers in disbelief, as the app was praised for its convenience.
Official Statement from M&S
An M&S spokesperson confirmed the move to The Sun, stating: “We regularly review our in-store services to ensure we’re delivering the best possible experience for our customers. Given low customer take up, we’ve decided to switch off our Scan & Shop mobile app service so we can focus on the services our customers use and value most.” The representative further clarified that this change does not affect the handheld Scan & Shop devices, which remain popular and will continue to be available in more stores.
Shopper Reactions
Social media users expressed their dismay. One shopper wrote: “Oh no is this true? I absolutely swear by it when I’m just popping in for a couple things.” Another added: “Can’t believe Marks and Spencer has stopped doing Scan & Shop. It was great. Really quick and easy. Now you will have to wait in queues again.” A third user, who had relied on the app for years, commented: “I will be returning to my nearby Sainsbury’s more often.” Another customer lamented: “Boo! I used it yesterday so this is sad to hear.”
M&S Food Transformation
This development comes as M&S accelerates the transformation of its Food business. The company plans to double the size of its Frozen range to better cater to family customers. Alex Freudmann, Managing Director of M&S Food, explained: “More families than ever are shopping at M&S, and as we grow the Food business we are focused on making more of the weekly shop feel relevant for them. Frozen is an important category in that mission, so we are investing to bring customers more choice - starting with a complete transformation of our ice cream range.” The new offerings include everyday family favourites like whole Milk Pops and Fruit Pops made with 100% real fruit juice, as well as indulgent treats and the new Only 8 Ingredients 85% Dark Chocolate Ice Cream.
