McDonald's customers have sparked an online resale frenzy, selling pots of the chain's famous Big Mac sauce for up to twelve times the original price on platforms like eBay and Vinted. The sauce became available for individual purchase this week as part of a new, limited-time "secret menu" promotion.
The Secret Menu Goes Official
For the first time in the UK and Ireland, McDonald's has officially launched a "Secret Menu," inspired by popular customer customisations shared online for years. The menu will be available for a limited period of six weeks, turning fan-created hacks into reality. Items include the Surf N’ Turf, the Chicken Cheeseburger, and the Apple Pie Mini McFlurry.
Ben Fox, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for McDonald’s UK & Ireland, commented on the launch. "We’re really happy to now make The Secret Menu official in the UK&I, turning fan-favourite hacks into reality," he said. "Some of these mash ups shouldn’t work, but they are weirdly good and need to be tried to be believed."
Big Mac Sauce Sparks Online Gold Rush
A key part of this menu launch is the sale of 25ml pots of the rich and creamy Big Mac sauce, marketed as a dip for Fries or McNuggets. However, the limited availability has led to a swift secondary market. While the sauce retails in restaurants, entrepreneurial fans are listing it online at a significant markup.
One eBay seller was recently offering a pack of five official pots for £12.99, which works out to £2.60 per pot—a steep increase from the in-store price. This activity on resale platforms highlights the high demand and scarcity of the product.
What Else is on the Limited Menu?
Beyond the sauce, the secret menu features another notable combination. McDonald's is promoting a "surprisingly tasty new combo" that pairs a Filet-O-Fish with a Cheeseburger, described as "fish meeting beef in one delicious duo." This nationwide recognition of customer creativity celebrates the unofficial menu hacks that have circulated on social media for years.
The company stated, "For years, McDonald’s fans have been quietly customising orders and sharing off-menu favourites. This January, McDonald’s is bringing those ideas into the open." With the six-week clock ticking, customers eager to try the official Big Mac sauce dip or other secret items may need to act fast before they disappear—or face inflated prices online.
