Tesco shoppers stunned by £20 toothpaste price in Birmingham
Birmingham shoppers shocked by £20 toothpaste price

Shoppers at a major Tesco store in Birmingham have been left in a state of disbelief after discovering a tube of toothpaste carrying a staggering £20 price tag.

A Pricy Discovery on the Shelves

The product causing the uproar was the Oral-B Intensive Whitening toothpaste, found on the shelves of the Tesco Superstore on Coventry Road in Sheldon. While a similar Express Whitening item was priced at £10, the £20 cost for the Oral-B product was seen as a new extreme. This is not an isolated case, however, as everyday brands like Colgate and Oral-B are now frequently costing British consumers between £8 and £10 in supermarkets nationwide.

Adding to the context, a 75ml tube of Colgate Max White Ultra was spotted at the same Tesco for £9.50. The price dropped to £5 for customers using a Tesco loyalty card, illustrating the growing price gap for those without such schemes.

Public Outcry Over Essential Costs

The expensive find has sparked strong reactions from customers, many of whom are struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis. Paul Hunt, a 40-year-old builder, did not hold back, stating, "£20 is a bit excessive for toothpaste. To me they all do the same thing so why would you spend £20?" He branded the price a "rip-off" and confirmed he usually shops at Aldi to avoid such high costs.

Nina Devi, a 23-year-old nurse, questioned the product's value, saying, "If you look at the other brands, there's probably the same ingredients... You can get those toothpastes for about £3." She stated her maximum spend would be around £2.50.

Another anonymous shopper called the situation "ridiculous" and "scandalous," suggesting that only corporate greed could justify such a price. Caroline Hendon, a 42-year-old support worker, echoed the sentiment of profiteering, emphasising that "people haven't got that kind of money" for a £20 toothpaste amidst job losses and rising living costs.

Supermarket Response and Wider Implications

In response to the controversy, a Tesco spokesperson defended the supermarket's range, stating, “We have a wide range of toothpastes available at Tesco, with prices starting at just 50p.” This statement highlights the vast disparity in product pricing within a single store, from budget essentials to premium items that are shocking the public. The incident in Birmingham serves as a potent symbol of the financial pressures facing many households on everyday goods.
