Claire's Accessories Shuts Down on Birmingham's New Street
Claire's Accessories has officially closed its doors on Birmingham's bustling New Street, marking the end of an era for the popular retailer in the city centre. The Bullring branch is also expected to follow suit in the near future, as the company continues to grapple with financial difficulties after collapsing into administration earlier this year.
A Mainstay Retailer Faces Uncertain Future
For decades, Claire's has been a familiar presence on high streets across Britain, but its stores have been vanishing rapidly following the company's entry into administration in January 2026. This marks the second time in just one year that Claire's has faced such financial turmoil, leaving the New Street unit now vacant and silent.
When BirminghamLive visited the Bullring location on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the store was still operational, with staff confirming that no specific closing date had been announced yet. However, signs on the windows advertised a stock clearance sale, hinting at an impending final day for this branch as well.
Local Roots and Recent Struggles
Although Claire's was originally founded in Chicago in 1961, its head office is based in Erdington, Birmingham, and it has maintained a strong regional presence with stores in areas like Sutton Coldfield and Merry Hill. In a bid to stabilise the business and protect employees, Modella Capital purchased 156 branches in September 2025.
The Bullring store has been a fixture in the shopping centre for its entire 23-year history, even relocating to a different unit within the complex in summer 2025. At that time, a sign in the old unit read 'like we'd ever leave you', a poignant reminder of the retailer's longstanding commitment to the area.
Broader Retail Challenges in Birmingham
This closure comes amid other retail uncertainties in the city. Recently, it was revealed that staff at the last remaining standalone branch of Argos in Birmingham have been informed it may close in April 2027 due to a proposed building demolition. Argos has assured employees that relocation options will be explored if necessary, though nothing is confirmed yet.
Meanwhile, work is currently underway on New Street, just outside the former Claire's store, as part of a major public realm transformation project aimed at refreshing the city centre. This redevelopment highlights the ongoing changes in Birmingham's retail landscape, as traditional stores face challenges in an evolving market.
The closure of Claire's Accessories on New Street not only impacts shoppers but also reflects broader trends in the retail sector, where even well-established brands are struggling to adapt. As the city continues to transform, residents and visitors alike will watch closely to see how these spaces are repurposed in the future.
