Outdoor play scheme for young children gets vital grant

An outdoor play scheme for young children and their carers has received vital financial backing from a local funding organisation. The crucial grant enabled the initiative to run throughout the summer while long-term support was secured.

Programme details

The special programme provides structured outdoor play sessions for babies and toddlers alongside their parents and carers. Delivered by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, the initiative offers an inclusive space for families navigating neurodevelopmental differences.

Local parents say the regular outdoor meetups have boosted their confidence, reduced isolation, and allowed children to explore nature safely. The project was first launched as a pilot back in 2022 and has since transformed the lives of participating families.

Funding and future plans

Organisers are now preparing to announce details about the next phase of the scheme after securing further support. Abi Marriott, Funding Officer at the Pembrokeshire Coast Charitable Trust, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to The Waterloo Foundation for supporting First 1000 Days and helping us keep this important programme running during a period of funding uncertainty.”

She continued: “We’ve seen the difference these sessions make to children and families, and it has been an honour to support the brilliant team delivering the programme.” She added: “Their dedication, care and commitment to the families they work with is clear in every session, and it’s fantastic to see how First 1000 Days continues to develop.”

Impact and next steps

She concluded: “Thank you to The Waterloo Foundation for helping make this work possible and for supporting families during such an important stage of their children’s development.” To find out more about local family programmes, visit www.pembrokeshirecoast.wales.
