An iconic bank brand is set to disappear from the high street after 173 years, according to reports. Lloyds Banking Group is poised to axe the Halifax brand within months.
Timeline of the change
Lloyds, which operates Halifax, is expected to announce the end of Halifax as a standalone brand this summer. The Sun reports the axe will begin on July 1, when customers will no longer be able to open new Halifax accounts via the brand’s app or website. By October, Halifax will cease taking on new-to-bank customers entirely, and existing account holders will be gradually migrated to Lloyds Bank.
Official statement
A spokesperson for the banking group, which has branches in Birmingham, said: “We regularly look at the role our brands play in supporting our customers. Our banking customers can already use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, and see any of their products and services in any of their apps — there are no changes for our customers today.”
Bank of Scotland switcher offer
It comes on the day Lloyds' other brand Bank of Scotland has launched its latest switcher offer, paying £175 to eligible customers who switch their current account from another bank to selected Bank of Scotland accounts. The offer is available when switching to Classic, Silver and Platinum accounts and will be available between 19th May and 29th June 2026. The reward will be paid within 10 working days of the switch completing, with customers able to switch simply through the app or online, with support available in branch.
The offer is available to eligible customers, when they switch to a new qualifying Bank of Scotland current account. Customers can also take advantage of Everyday Offers, providing cashback when shopping at select retailers. Changing banks can feel like a hassle, but the Current Account Switch Service moves customers’ existing payments, such as Direct Debits and standing orders, automatically and securely.
