IKEA Croydon to Host Decathlon in UK-First Retail Partnership This Spring
IKEA has unveiled a groundbreaking change for one of its UK stores, marking a first for Britain. Ingka Group, the owner of most IKEA outlets globally, confirmed that sports retailer Decathlon will open a store within the IKEA Croydon location this spring. This initiative is part of a trial to integrate third-party businesses into IKEA stores, aiming to attract more shoppers and monetise existing retail space effectively.
Details of the Decathlon Integration
The Decathlon store will be a standalone unit with its own customer entrance, covering 1,188 square metres within the 25,000 square metre IKEA store. This move represents the first time a major international brand has been brought into an IKEA 'blue-box' store in the UK, following smaller trials with Nordic electronics retailer Kjell & Company in Sweden.
Strategic Goals and Future Plans
IKEA is exploring similar opportunities in other European and North American countries as part of a broader strategy to revamp its stores, adapt to changing shopping habits, and boost footfall. Javier Quiñones, Commercial Manager at Ingka Group IKEA, stated: “Our ambition is to become as accessible as ever and give customers more reasons to visit us wherever they are on their home journey. By testing new ways of using our retail space together with other retailers, we want to further evolve our stores into inviting destinations that reflect what customers want today – convenience, inspiration and an expanded offer.”
Croydon will be the first IKEA store in the UK to pilot this concept, after similar cooperations have been announced in other IKEA markets. With IKEA retail operations in 32 markets, Ingka Group is the largest IKEA retailer, representing 87% of IKEA retail sales.
Additional Retail Space and Renovations
Once renovations are completed in fall 2026, about 2,600 square metres will be made available for other retailers, including Thomas Philipps, the discount home and garden specialist. This expansion highlights IKEA's commitment to transforming its stores into multifunctional retail hubs that cater to diverse consumer needs.
