Kai Wagner Explains Shock Blues Exit After Six Months

Kai Wagner has explained his shock decision to leave Birmingham City just six months after arriving at the club. The left-back has returned to Philadelphia Union after only 18 appearances for Blues and with two years remaining on the deal he signed in January.

Emotional Farewell to Blues Fans

In an interview with Blues TV, the 29-year-old opened up on his thinking and thanked Blues fans for their support. He said: “This is one of the hardest messages I've ever had to write and to speak of. After countless conversations between me and my family we made the extremely difficult decision to move back to the United States.”

“I want to make one thing absolutely clear. This decision has nothing to do with Birmingham City. From the first day this club welcomed me and my family with open arms the owners, the board, the coaching staff, my teammates, the medical department and everyone behind the scenes have been nothing but incredible.”

“Throughout this process, the club did everything possible to support us and I will always be grateful for that.”

Family Reasons Behind Departure

Wagner emphasized the personal nature of his decision: “The only reason for that decision is my family. As parents sometimes we have to make choices that are painful but feel right for our children and for our future. This is purely a personal and family decision.”

He also addressed his teammates and supporters: “To my teammates and everyone at the club, thank you for making me feel at home from day one. It has been an honour to be part of this club. And to the supporters, thank you from the bottom of my heart. From the first time I wore this shirt, you made me feel proud to represent this city.”

“Your passion, loyalty and support meant more to me than words can express. I know some of you will be disappointed and I completely understand that. But please know that I personally made the decision for my family.”

Reflection on Time at St Andrew's

Wagner also spoke to the Philadelphia Union website and rejoins a club that is currently 15th and bottom of the Eastern Conference after 15 games. Asked about his time at Blues he told them: “The experience was unbelievable, to be honest. I mean, the club is one of the biggest ones in England. Just to see the fan base there, to get the whole different lifestyle and environment was such a special experience, and I'm really grateful that I made that step – to see a different playing style and stuff was really, really special. I met great people and got a lot of new friends.”

“I think when you move away a little bit, I think it helps you also to grow as yourself a little bit. I think the biggest thing, what I had to change was that I'm not the guy anymore. For me, I went there, and there was a lot of players who played at a high level already, and played in World Cups and other stuff. I wasn't the main guy anymore. For me, it was just to get there, make my mark there, but also to come back here as a leader and really want to help this team.”

Looking Ahead to Philadelphia Union Return

Wagner expressed optimism about his former club's future: “When we see where the team stands at the moment, I don't think it belongs there. I watched every game. Even when the games were super late in England, I watched every game, and I saw a lot of progress already. I think it was just unlucky. I think over the next couple of weeks, I think the defence can expect a lot more, with Ryan Richter now, the new team, and what he wants to build. So I'm really, really excited about what will happen this season.”

Wagner concluded his farewell with a heartfelt message: “Birmingham City will always hold a special place in my heart. I leave with immense gratitude and nothing but love and respect for everyone connected to the club. Thank you for everything. I wish Birmingham City every success in the future. With love and gratitude, Keep Right On Kai.”
