Two former Halfords employees have been sentenced for stealing £130,000 worth of dashcams and selling them on eBay, in what police described as a significant abuse of trust. The pair exploited their positions at the company's distribution centre in Birmingham to carry out the thefts over a period of several months.
How the Theft Unfolded
Lee Smith, 42, and Darren Jones, 38, both from Birmingham, worked at Halfords' national distribution centre in the city. They used their access to stock to remove dashcams, which were then listed and sold on eBay. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at £130,000. The thefts came to light after Halfords conducted an internal audit and noticed discrepancies in stock levels.
Smith and Jones were arrested in 2023 and later charged with theft by employee. They pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court in January 2024. The court heard that the pair had been working together to steal the dashcams, which were high-end models retailing for several hundred pounds each.
Sentencing and Impact
On 15 February 2024, Smith was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. Jones received an 18-month suspended sentence and 180 hours of unpaid work. Both were also ordered to pay compensation to Halfords. Detective Constable Sarah Williams of West Midlands Police said: "This was a calculated abuse of trust. They used their positions for personal gain, causing significant financial loss to their employer."
Halfords stated that the company had since improved its security measures to prevent such incidents. A spokesperson said: "We take any breach of trust extremely seriously and have implemented stricter controls to safeguard our stock." The case serves as a warning about the consequences of workplace theft and the importance of robust internal checks.
