Matalan Confirms Closure of 73,000 Sq Ft Megastore in Kendal
Matalan has officially announced the shutdown of a massive 73,000 square foot megastore located at the Lakeland Retail Park in Kendal. The store closed its doors this week, as previously confirmed by a company spokesperson ahead of April.
Support for Affected Colleagues
A Matalan representative stated: “Our store at South Lakeland Retail Park will close in April. Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We are working closely with all those affected and, where possible, exploring alternative positions.” The company expressed gratitude for serving customers at the retail park and encouraged them to continue shopping at the nearby Lancaster store.
Recent Store Closures and Business Strategy
This closure follows the shutdown of two other Matalan locations in Pendle and Carlisle during March. Company executives explained: “As part of the normal course of business, we occasionally close some stores, while exploring opportunities for openings in other locations.” Customers are reminded that they can still access Matalan's full product range through the company's website, app, or at any of its 220 stores across the United Kingdom.
Investment in Refurbishments
Despite these closures, Matalan is actively investing in its retail network. The company is currently refurbishing 40 of its locations. In 2025 alone, 30 stores were renovated at a cost of £25 million, demonstrating a continued commitment to enhancing its physical presence in select areas.
