National Highways has announced a series of carriageway and link road closures across the West Midlands motorway network, starting on Tuesday night, October 20, and continuing until Wednesday morning, October 21. The closures are required for maintenance works and will affect drivers on both the M6 and the M5.
M6 southbound closure between Junction 12 and Junction 11
The southbound carriageway of the M6 will be closed between Junction 12, Gailey, and Junction 11, Essington. This closure will begin at 9pm tonight and remain in place until 6am tomorrow. Drivers travelling southbound on the M6 during these hours should expect delays and follow the official diversion route.
M5 closures: southbound carriageway and link roads
On the M5, the southbound carriageway will be closed between Junction 3, Quinton, and Junction 4a, Catshill, from 9pm tonight until 6am tomorrow. In addition, the southbound link road between the M5's Junction 4a and the M42 will be closed during the same overnight period, from 9pm to 6am.
The westbound link road of the M5, which connects to the M6, will also close between 9pm and 6am. National Highways regularly carries out maintenance work, scheduling the majority of work overnight to minimise disruption for motorists.
Diversions in place for affected drivers
Diversions will be in place for drivers affected by the closures. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys ahead of time and allow extra travel time while the maintenance works are underway. The closures are expected to be lifted by 6am tomorrow morning, restoring normal traffic flow on both motorways.
