Morrisons Confirms New £13 Pay Rate from July 20

Morrisons has confirmed that a new £13 hourly pay rate for Customer Assistants will take effect from July 20, 2026, following a ballot where 91.87% of colleagues voted in favor of the proposed pay deal. The supermarket giant, which operates branches across the UK including in Birmingham, announced that the agreement with USDAW will be rolled out in three phases.

Phased Implementation of the Pay Deal

From Monday, March 30, 2026, the established rate of pay for a Customer Assistant was increased to £12.81, while all other established hourly rates for roles covered by the national agreement increased by 10p. This initial phase aligned with the introduction of the new National Living Wage.

The second phase, effective from Monday, July 20, 2026, will see the Customer Assistant rate rise from £12.81 to £13.00, with other roles receiving a 19p increase. Finally, from Monday, October 26, 2026, the Customer Assistant rate will increase further to £13.11, and other roles will see an additional 11p rise.

Additional Benefits for Colleagues

In addition to the hourly rate increases, all eligible hourly paid colleagues will receive a one-off fixed payment ranging from £25 to £175, based on their contractual hours. This move is part of Morrisons' effort to reward staff for their contributions.

Jodie Keating, Group People Director of Morrisons, said: “We’re pleased that we can now implement the pay proposal and increase pay for our colleagues to reward them for the contribution they make to our business. I would like to thank all our colleagues for everything they continue to do for Morrisons.”

Context and Competition

The pay rise comes as Morrisons faces stiff competition from rivals such as Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, and Sainsbury's. The supermarket had previously increased its Customer Assistant pay rate from £12.21 to £12.71 in March 2026, reflecting the new National Living Wage. The latest deal ensures Morrisons remains competitive in the retail sector.
