M&S Valentine's Meal Deal Slammed as 'Ridiculous'

M&S Valentine's Meal Deal Faces Customer Backlash Over £25 Price Tag

Marks & Spencer shoppers have expressed strong criticism of the retailer's Valentine's Day dine-in meal deal, labeling its £25 price as "ridiculous" and comparing it unfavorably to more affordable supermarket options.

Customer Complaints Highlight Price Concerns

Social media platforms have become a forum for discontent, with numerous customers voicing their dissatisfaction. One Facebook user remarked, "They are ridiculously expensive now and prices seem to rise weekly," while another nostalgically noted, "Remember 10 years ago and this used to be £10 and you'd get a bottle of wine included."

Further criticism came from shoppers who argued the cost is comparable to dining out, with comments such as "can eat out for that" and simple exclamations like "yikes."

Comparisons with Competitor Deals

Many customers pointed to Asda's alternative, with one social media user advising, "Try Asda," and another supporting this by describing Asda's deal as "£12 and lovely." A third comment emphasized, "See previous Asda posts – half the price for more," highlighting a significant price disparity for what some perceive as better value.

The M&S deal, available in stores until Saturday, February 14, offers a three-course meal with a drink, featuring Valentine's-themed desserts and is marketed as allowing customers to "indulge in a restaurant-quality feast without leaving home."

Market Context and Company Response

According to market research firm Mintel, 70% of UK residents agree that having an evening meal at home can be just as enjoyable as dining out. Interestingly, a survey by consumer insight agency Vypr ranked M&S as the top choice for customers shopping for dine-in meals and dinner ingredients for Valentine's Day this year.

Kathryn Turner, Director of Product Development at M&S Food, defended the offer, stating, "M&S is the home of Dine In and Valentine's Day is the most popular celebration to spend at home. This year our M&S Valentine's Day Dine In offer is the best it's ever been – every single product is from our Collection range, made to restaurant quality standards and we've included a bottle of Crémant following its rise in popularity."

The collection is described by M&S as featuring "expertly crafted dishes made from the very best ingredients," positioning it as a premium home dining experience despite the customer backlash over its cost.
