Black Country Living Museum Unveils New Dog-Friendly Policy for 2026

The Black Country Living Museum in Dudley has announced a significant update to its visitor policy, following what it describes as a 'careful review' of recent trials. Starting immediately and continuing throughout the remainder of 2026, dogs will be permitted to accompany their owners at the popular heritage attraction on Thursdays and Sundays.

Expanded Access for Canine Companions

Since November of last year, the museum has been testing 'dog days' on a trial basis, allowing pets on short, non-retractable leads to explore the historical site alongside their families. Previously, dogs were only allowed in limited areas such as the visitor centre, the Workers' Institute, and the café. Under the new policy, access has been expanded to include the downstairs sections of the museum's two historic pubs: the Bottle & Glass Inn and the Elephant & Castle Pub.

A museum spokesperson explained the decision, stating, 'Following a careful review of our dog trial feedback, we will be welcoming dogs on Thursdays and Sundays throughout the rest of 2026. As part of the new offer, we’ll also be welcoming dogs into our two historic pubs – Bottle & Glass Inn and Elephant & Castle Pub (downstairs only).'

Balancing Visitor Preferences

The museum emphasized that the choice to limit dog-friendly days to two per week was intentional, based on visitor feedback. 'Having listened to all your feedback, we have chosen to stick to two days in a week, as we know it’s important that we can still offer dog-free days for those of you that prefer a dog-free experience,' the spokesperson added. This approach aims to cater to both pet owners and visitors who may have allergies or simply prefer an animal-free environment.

However, there are exceptions to the new policy. Dogs will not be allowed entry on specific 'special daytime events' scheduled for May 17, June 14, and July 12. Visitors are encouraged to check the museum's website for detailed information and to review the 'Canine Code' in advance of their visit to ensure a smooth experience.

Positive Reception from the Community

The announcement, shared on the museum's Facebook page, was met with enthusiastic responses from the public. Many commenters expressed excitement about the opportunity to bring their pets along for a historical outing. One visitor, Jo, commented, 'Yes! Can't wait to bring my dogs to the pubs.' Another, Karen, noted, 'A great idea, especially as there’s a day at the weekend so families can bring their dogs too.'

Amy shared a personal perspective, writing, 'Amazing. Well done BCLM. We love visiting but I also hate leaving my dogs behind on days out and often choose dog friendly places instead. They are my family and we want them to join in. Will definitely make us want to visit more and we will renew our Unchained pass for this year.' This sentiment highlights how the new policy could potentially boost visitor numbers and loyalty among pet owners.

The museum concluded its announcement with a playful note, encouraging visitors to prepare for their trips: 'We can’t wait to welcome your furry friends on Thursdays and Sundays, so make sure you’ve got your short lead, poo bags and treats at the ready for a pawsome trip back in time!' This update marks a thoughtful step towards inclusivity, allowing more families to enjoy the museum's immersive historical experience together.
