New Lidl Supermarket Opens in Kingstanding, Birmingham, Drawing Crowds

Shoppers flocked to the opening of a new supermarket in Birmingham, with crowds braving the cold and rain on Thursday, February 12, to be among the first through the doors of Lidl at Kingstanding Circle.

Transformation of a Derelict Site

The German budget chain took over the fire-ravaged Kingstanding pub site and the derelict shopping centre site next door, transforming it into a 2,175 square meter store. This development includes a new road layout and has created new jobs for the local community.

Local Enthusiasm and Economic Impact

Councillor Clifton Welch expressed his excitement about the supermarket, stating it is great for the local economy. He arrived just before 8 am and observed a queue of approximately 75 to 100 people waiting to enter. A small show with dancing preceded the opening, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Welch praised the layout of the shop as beautiful and well-organized, noting that many schoolchildren were waiting to visit the bakery. He emphasized that this investment is beneficial for Kingstanding Circle and good for job creation in the area.

Positive Community Feedback

Locals took to social media to share their thoughts on the new addition. Craig Heath commented on Facebook, saying, "Much needed boost to Kingstanding Circle, definitely improved the look of the area." This sentiment reflects broader community approval of the development.

Broader Impact and Future Prospects

Councillor Welch also mentioned that Lidl has attracted new businesses to the area, including a funeral directors set to open in the next fortnight. This indicates a potential ripple effect of economic growth and revitalization in Kingstanding.

Other Lidl supermarkets in the Birmingham region include locations on Old Walsall Road in Hamstead, Kings Road in Sutton Coldfield, and Sutton Road in Erdington, showcasing the chain's expanding presence in the city.
