Tesco Announces Major UK Expansion with 11 New Supermarkets
Tesco, the UK's leading supermarket chain, has officially confirmed the locations for 11 new supermarkets set to open across the country this year. This strategic expansion includes the acquisition of several former Amazon Fresh sites, marking a significant move in the competitive retail landscape.
Acquisition of Former Amazon Fresh Locations
The grocer has successfully taken over five former Amazon Fresh branches in London, all of which are expected to be rebranded as Tesco Express stores and operational before the summer of 2026. This acquisition underscores Tesco's aggressive growth strategy as it aims to enhance its presence in key urban areas.
Nationwide Store Openings
In addition to the London sites, new Tesco Express locations will be established in various regions, including Bickington in Devon, Pontrhydyrun in Torfaen, Wales, Strabane in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and Wallyford in East Lothian, Scotland. These openings are part of Tesco's broader plan to open 70 new stores by 2027, demonstrating its commitment to serving communities across the UK.
Larger Stores in Scotland
Scotland will also see the introduction of two larger Tesco branches in Pitlochry, Perth and Kinross, and Heartlands, West Lothian. While exact opening dates for all branches have not been finalized, these developments highlight Tesco's focus on catering to diverse customer needs, though it remains unclear whether these will be Tesco Extra or Superstore formats.
