The Sugar Loaf, a popular independent cafe in Stourbridge town centre, has been named a finalist for Best Cafe at The UK Small Business Awards 2026. Owner Charlie Mainprice expressed her delight at the recognition.
Cafe's journey to the finals
The tea room relocated from its former home in Victoria Passage to a larger unit on Fountain Square, opposite Iceland, in the heart of the town centre last October. The move has positioned the cafe more prominently among local businesses.
Mainprice, a married mother of three, said: "Out of tens of thousands of small businesses across the UK, our little independent cafe here in Stourbridge has made it through to the final round. And I think the bit that got me the most was seeing this on our certificate…'Representing Stourbridge'. I can’t really put into words how much that means to me."
Owner's emotional response
Mainprice acknowledged the pressures faced by small business owners, particularly in the hospitality sector. She said: "Like so many other small business owners, especially those of us in hospitality, the stresses we carry behind the scenes are huge. Every day there is something to worry about. Will we be busy enough? Are we doing enough? What can we do better? And ultimately, can we keep making it all work?"
Despite these concerns, she finds motivation in the daily atmosphere of the cafe. "But then I walk into The Sugar Loaf and see a full table laughing together, someone enjoying a coffee on their own, our regulars coming through the door, our team chatting to customers… and I see the joy this little place brings to people. And somehow, it makes all of those worries feel a little lighter," she added.
Gratitude and community support
Mainprice expressed her appreciation for the recognition and her team. "I just feel incredibly grateful that The Sugar Loaf has been recognised amongst so many amazing small businesses across the UK. And I couldn’t do any of this without my amazing team and every single one of you who continues to walk through our doors, recommend us, share our posts and support what we’re trying to build," she said.
The UK Small Business Awards 2026 will see The Sugar Loaf compete against other finalists from across the country. The cafe’s shortlisting highlights its role in the local community and its growth since the move to Fountain Square.
