GMB Host Faces Backlash Over Social Media Post

Good Morning Britain presenter Adil Ray has reportedly been summoned by ITV management following controversial remarks he made about Sharia law on social media. The incident occurred just one day after he posted about the election of New York's new Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

The Controversial Comments and Immediate Fallout

Ray took to X, formerly Twitter, to comment on Mamdani's victory. He wrote: "Some say Mamdani may implement Sharia Law. He might. The heart of Sharia is social justice, welfare, fairness, charity and cohesion." The post continued: "Most Muslim countries operate a hybrid of Sharia & civil law, are slowly reforming and abandoning unethical practices despite the west’s portrayal."

A source told The Sun newspaper that GMB executives were "pretty cross" about the comments. The insider revealed: "His comments sent bosses into a tailspin and he was called in. It was a nightmare as hours earlier ITV revealed it was in talks to sell its broadcasting arm to Sky in a £1.6billion deal. Obviously, they don’t want anything to derail that."

Ray's Clarification and Industry Reaction

The Birmingham comedian and writer later attempted to clarify his statement on both Bluesky and X. He explained: "To clarify. I am not actually suggesting Mamdani would implement 'sharia law'. But many of the issues he campaigned for are also some of the positive values of Sharia that Muslims try to live by. Something many of us would agree on."

The controversy emerged amid congratulations from other prominent figures, including Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan, who praised New York for following London in "choosing hope over fear" by electing Mamdani.
