One of the UK's top managed service providers is marking a significant milestone with a substantial seven-figure investment. Intercity, founded in Birmingham in 1985, has celebrated its 40th anniversary by completing a landmark £1.8 million investment programme.
From Mobile Phones to a £100m Vision
The company, which began life as a mobile phone specialist under founder Alan Jackson, has used its anniversary to replace its legacy systems. It has implemented a new, AI-powered ecosystem designed to provide the foundation for its ambitious goal of reaching £100 million in revenue by 2030.
This technological refresh is powered by Microsoft Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Halo ITSM. CEO Charlie Blakemore stated the investment gives the firm "the foundations and the capability to accelerate our expansion."
The journey from its telecom origins to a leading technology managed service provider was solidified 25 years after its founding, when it relaunched as Intercity Technology.
Growth, Acquisitions, and a Microsoft-First Focus
Intercity's growth trajectory has been robust. Over a period of strong growth, it has more than doubled its revenue from £25m to £55m. This has been achieved through organic growth and strategic acquisitions, including Chandler Communications and Centrality.
The Centrality acquisition was particularly pivotal, granting Intercity the status of a Microsoft First Managed Service Provider (MSP). This role involves acting as a trusted partner to run, secure, and optimise clients' Microsoft environments. This expertise also led to an invitation to join the exclusive Microsoft Intelligent Security Association (MISA) earlier this year.
Celebrating a Birmingham Home and Community Commitment
While operating UK-wide from sites in Bedford, Bolton, Nuneaton, and Northampton, Intercity remains deeply rooted in its Birmingham birthplace. Group CEO Andrew Jackson, son of founder Alan, emphasised the company's passion for the city, citing its talent pool and enterprising culture.
The firm has also made its mark on the local sporting scene, serving as the official IT partner for Edgbaston Cricket Stadium and Birmingham City Football Club. To commemorate its 40th year, Intercity has reaffirmed its environmental and social governance (ESG) commitments. This includes planting 200 trees annually and renewing support for LoveBrum and Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Changemaker Programme.
Beyond the headquarters, the £1.8m investment has funded upgrades across all five of its UK sites to create greener and smarter workplaces, alongside a new technical training and cyber awareness Academy.
With a history tracing back to a chance meeting between founder Alan Jackson and mobile phone inventor Martin Cooper in 1982, Intercity is now positioned for its next chapter. Bolstered by its recent investment and recognised as a 'Wired Trailblazer' and award-winning employer, the company is focusing on strategic cyber security services to help businesses navigate an evolving threat landscape.
