Father's Emotional 192-Mile Walk Raises Over £23,000 for Life-Saving Hospitals
A father's heartfelt fundraising challenge has generated an impressive £23,876 for two vital hospital charities, following a powerful 192-mile journey on foot from Swansea to London. Alex Kiley undertook this six-day walk in July 2025, symbolically connecting the hospitals that provided critical care to his son, Theo, shortly after birth.
A Journey of Gratitude and Determination
The walk was both a physical endurance test and an emotional tribute to the exceptional medical teams at Singleton Hospital in Swansea and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London. Alex was joined by his close friend Gavin and his 72-year-old father, walking from Swansea directly to GOSH over six demanding days.
"This challenge was about gratitude," Alex explained. "The care Theo received at Singleton and GOSH was nothing short of extraordinary. Without it, our story could have been very different."
The team walked for 17 hours on the very first day alone, traversing the landscapes of Wales and England before arriving in London the following Friday. Their arrival was met with an emotional welcome from family members and hospital staff who had supported their journey.
Community-Driven Fundraising Efforts
The fundraising extended well beyond the walk itself, encompassing a year-long community effort. Multiple events were organized, including:
- A live music concert featuring local performers
- A charity golf day attended by 200 participants
- A celebratory evening event held in Swansea
These initiatives brought together supporters from across the community, demonstrating the widespread impact of Theo's story and the family's determination to give back.
Making a Real Difference for Families
Alex has generously allocated the funds raised to directly benefit the hospitals that cared for his son. £13,876 has been donated to Singleton Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to enhance facilities, equipment, and family support services. The remaining £10,000 has been donated to GOSH Charity to support seriously ill children from across the United Kingdom.
Catrin Jones, Digital Fundraising and Engagement Officer at Swansea Bay Health Charity, shared: "We met Alex last week for a cheque presentation, and it's amazing to see it all lead to this moment. It was so special to see Alex, Theo and the family return to Singleton NICU under much happier circumstances. The funds raised will make a real difference to families who find themselves in similar situations."
Gabi Field, Deputy Director of Public Fundraising at GOSH Charity, added: "On behalf of everyone at GOSH Charity, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to Alex and his family for their incredible fundraising efforts. Inspired by his son Theo's journey, the money raised by Alex's epic 192-mile walk will make a truly lasting difference to children and their families treated at GOSH, who are facing some of the toughest challenges."
The walk represents months of careful planning and training, culminating in a remarkable demonstration of community spirit and personal dedication. The funds will continue to support families experiencing similar medical challenges, ensuring that the legacy of Theo's care extends far beyond his own recovery.
