Marsden Foundation Awards £2,869 to Support Garstang Carers' Group
£2,869 Grant Boosts Support for Garstang's Carers

Funding Boost for Local Carers

A much-needed financial injection of £2,869 has been granted to Age UK Lancashire by The Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation. This funding is dedicated to supporting the Garstang and District Carers’ Support Group, a monthly drop-in session that provides a lifeline for those caring for older people in the community.

A Vital Community Lifeline

The support group meets every month at Garstang Methodist Church and currently provides crucial support to 17 carers and the individuals they care for, most of whom are aged 70 and over. The sessions offer a safe and relaxed environment where carers can connect with peers, share their experiences, and listen to expert guest speakers on topics ranging from scam awareness to later life legal planning.

The grant specifically covers the cost of a Community Engagement Manager, a role pivotal to the group's operation. This manager not only helps run the sessions but also actively works to reach isolated individuals who would benefit from the group, especially since the local Social Prescribing Service is no longer available.

Commitment to Community Impact

Rob Pheasey, chief executive of the Marsden Building Society, emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating: "This initiative provides a valuable lifeline for carers in Garstang and we’re proud to offer our support. Contributing to our communities is extremely important to us, as it’s our goal to have a positive and lasting impact on the neighbourhoods we serve."

Anne Oliver, community engagement manager at Age UK Lancashire, expressed her delight at the generous support. "Funding like this enables us to continue providing a safe space for carers in Garstang," she said. "Many of the people we support are caring for loved ones whilst also facing their own challenges. This group helps reduce isolation... Thanks to this donation, we can reach even more carers who may otherwise feel alone in their journey."

The Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation focuses its support on projects in Lancashire that promote financial wellbeing, societal inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
