Former West Bromwich Albion striker Andy Johnson is set to take on a gruelling challenge as he and a team, which includes a Michael Phelps lookalike, plan to kayak across the English Channel. The daring feat aims to raise money for the Albion Foundation, the club's official charity.
The Challenge
Johnson, who scored 31 goals in 93 appearances for the Baggies between 2006 and 2008, will be joined by three others for the 21-mile crossing from Dover to Calais. The team includes a man who bears a striking resemblance to Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps, adding a touch of celebrity mimicry to the endeavour.
The group will undertake the challenge in a four-person kayak, navigating one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. They expect the crossing to take between four and six hours, depending on weather and tide conditions.
Charity Cause
All funds raised will go to the Albion Foundation, which uses the power of sport to transform lives in the West Midlands. The foundation runs programmes in health, education, and inclusion, reaching thousands of people each year.
Johnson said: "I'm really excited but also a bit nervous. It's going to be a tough challenge, but it's for a great cause. The Albion Foundation does amazing work in the community, and I'm proud to be able to help."
Training and Preparation
The team has been training rigorously for months, building up their endurance and learning to paddle in sync. They have been practising on canals and reservoirs across the Midlands, as well as undertaking sea kayaking sessions to acclimatise to open water conditions.
Johnson added: "We've put in the hours on the water, but nothing can fully prepare you for the Channel. It's going to be a mental and physical battle, but we're determined to make it."
