Asda Foundation Launches £1.2 Million Grant for Boston Community Spaces
Asda Foundation Offers £1.2M Grant for Boston Community Spaces

Major Funding Boost for Boston Community Spaces

Registered charities and Community Interest Company (CIC) groups in the Boston area are being urged to apply for a significant new funding opportunity aimed at enhancing shared spaces that are central to local life. The grant, administered by the Asda Foundation, provides funding ranging from £10,000 to £20,000 per application as part of its higher value funding stream. This initiative is specifically designed to support grassroots organisations by creating and improving safe, welcoming environments where people can gather and connect.

Substantial Financial Support Available

In total, up to £1.2 million will be made available to community groups across the region. The funding can be utilised for a wide array of improvements, from essential repairs to larger-scale developments. Eligible projects may include renovating kitchens and bathrooms, repairing roofs and flooring, installing new boilers and heating systems, upgrading windows and doors, and necessary refurbishments such as replacing worn carpets to maintain a safe and welcoming atmosphere.

Additionally, funds can be allocated for upgrading security measures, improving accessibility for all users, enhancing facilities to make them fit for purpose, or reconfiguring areas to accommodate more users and activities within existing footprints. A key focus is on improving disabled access in community buildings to ensure inclusivity.

Addressing Community Needs and Challenges

The primary goal of this funding is to ensure that community spaces are safe, accessible, and fit for purpose by supporting essential repairs, maintenance, and improvements. This financial injection will help community spaces expand their capacity, enhance their facilities, and provide inclusive environments that meet the diverse needs of local communities.

Stephen Bromby, community champion at Asda Boston, emphasised the critical importance of such funding for local groups. “At Asda, we recognise that community organisations play a vital role in the neighbourhood around our store, driving positive change and improving people’s lives daily,” he stated. “However, one of the biggest challenges many face is having a suitable space to bring people together and deliver this fantastic work.”

Bromby further highlighted that accessible community spaces can serve as a lifeline for local residents, yet many require funding for repairs, renovations, and development to continue offering vital activities and services. He noted that loneliness and isolation remain top concerns in local communities across the UK, as identified through the Community Insight Survey.

“Through our Local Community Spaces Fund, we will continue playing our part in helping to fund safe and welcoming community spaces that bring people together, connect communities, and address loneliness and isolation,” Bromby added. “We have already pledged £3.84 million through this funding stream over the past four years, and for 2026, we will commit up to £1.2 million in grant funding support.”

Eligibility and Application Details

The grant programme is open to registered charities and CIC groups with an annual income between £40,000 and £400,000, ensuring that support is directed towards established, community-led initiatives with robust governance structures. Applications will be assessed based on how well projects align with the scheme’s funding priorities, which include:

  • Community centres or spaces hosting a variety of established groups catering to diverse ages, demographics, and needs, offering activities throughout the week.
  • Youth centres providing targeted support to young people in areas of high deprivation, with spaces that offer a range of activities to positively impact health, wellbeing, and lives.
  • Centres supporting the most vulnerable in high-deprivation areas, such as homeless shelters, foodbanks, dementia and elderly support services, and community cafes.

By focusing on these priorities, the fund aims to strengthen community infrastructure and ensure that local groups can continue delivering inclusive, accessible services.

How to Apply and Important Deadlines

Full details of the eligibility criteria are now available on the Asda Foundation’s website. Groups can also seek guidance and ask questions by contacting the Boston store’s community team directly via email. The application window will open at 10am on Tuesday, April 14, and close at 10am on Tuesday, April 28.

Organisations are encouraged to review the guidance carefully and prepare their applications in advance to ensure they are ready to submit once the window opens. It is crucial to select Asda Boston as the local store when submitting funding requests. However, applicants are advised not to delay, as due to high demand in previous rounds, the programme may close early if submissions exceed the available budget.
