Barnardo's to Close Multiple UK Branches Amid High Street Struggles
Barnardo's Closes Branches Due to High Street Challenges

Children's charity Barnardo's is closing several of its branches across the UK, citing increased operating costs, reduced consumer spending, and the growing popularity of online resale platforms such as Vinted. The closures have prompted closing-down sales at affected locations.

Recent Store Closures

The Newton Aycliffe store in Durham shut its doors on May 17, while the Kirkham branch in Lancashire will close permanently on May 15. The Coventry store at Central Six Retail Park is set to close at the end of May, and the Bishop's Stortford location will follow on May 24.

Charity's Response

Mark Gregory, managing director of Barnardo's, explained the decision: "In the last few years, there have been huge challenges for the UK high street, including increased operating costs for shops and reduced consumer spending, related to the economy and the cost-of-living crisis." He also noted that the rise of online platforms selling pre-loved clothing has impacted charity shop income. Gregory expressed gratitude to staff, volunteers, donors, and customers, emphasizing that the shops provide vital income for the charity's work with children and families.

Community Reaction

The Chippenham store closed on May 2, with one customer saying: "So, so sad, best charity shop around with the best friendly staff, will be very much missed." Another added: "I’m gutted it’s closed down, the community will miss you."

Barnardo's stated that it regularly reviews store performance and makes difficult decisions when branches are not generating a positive contribution to their mission of changing childhoods and lives.
