Alexander Harris, a 30-year-old trail runner from Birmingham, has died in Pakistan after reportedly falling approximately 200 feet into a ravine. The incident occurred on Musa Ka Musalla, a mountain exceeding 4,000 metres in altitude, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Mr Harris went missing on Saturday while descending from the mountain's summit. According to the deputy commissioner for the area, Khalid Iqbal, police and volunteers conducted a search before his body was discovered on a forest path, as reported by BBC News.
Wrong Trail in Adverse Weather
Margalla Trail Runners, a running group based in Islamabad of which Mr Harris was a member, posted on social media that he apparently strayed onto an incorrect trail due to adverse weather conditions and severely reduced visibility. The statement said: “With profound sadness, we confirm that Alexander Harris, an active member of the Margalla Trail Runners community and an avid trail runner, has been found deceased following an extensive search operation.”
The group's statement added: “According to preliminary information, Alex apparently strayed on to an incorrect trail due to adverse weather conditions and severely reduced visibility, subsequently falling into a ravine estimated to be approximately 200 feet deep.”
Background and Life in Pakistan
The BBC reported that Mr Harris was originally from Birmingham and also held Irish citizenship. He had been living in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, where he worked for global advisory company Adam Smith International.
Margalla Trail Runners shared tributes on Facebook, noting: “Alex had a deep love for Pakistan, particularly its mountains. He was learning Urdu and was deeply fascinated by Pakistan’s culture, people and traditions. He embraced the country with genuine admiration and treasured his experiences exploring its mountains.”
Community Mourning
The group extended condolences, stating: “We extend our deepest condolences to Alex’s family, friends, fellow runners and everyone who knew him. His loss will be deeply felt by the trail-running community and all those who shared his love for the mountains of Pakistan.”
The search operation involved both police and volunteers, according to deputy commissioner Khalid Iqbal. Mr Harris's body was found on a forest path following the extensive search that began after he was reported missing on Saturday.
